Royal council in London took control of government and decision taken for Edward to rule immediately
Hastings had to put forward Gloucesters claim as protector but this was rejected

Gloucester and Buckingham met Rivers and Grey, had a cordial night drinking and eating then next morning set out to meet Prince Edward
Gloucester announced Rivers, Grey and Vaughn were to be arrested and taken north
Gloucester met up with Prince and escorted him north, told Edward his uncle played a part in his fathers death

Royal party entered London but coronation was postponed until 25th June
10th May Gloucester secured protector, supported by Hastings and Edward’s household men
Protectorate would last 7 weeks and a day later Edward was sent to the tower for his protection
8th May- 12th June
Gloucester began a propaganda drive against the Woodvilles producing cartloads of weapons and claiming a plot against him
Tried to have rivers and grey executed but blocked by council, alienated enemies further
10-11th June Gloucester summoned military assistance from North sent one letter to York and other to Hull
Gloucester wrote of a plot against him organised by Elizabeth Woodville
13th June
During council meeting Gloucester declared that an ambush had been prepared for him and his life was in danger, Buckingham swept into chamber and arrested Hastings to be beheaded
Hastings accused of committing treason by conspiring against Gloucester, accused of working with Woodvilles to plan Richard’s downfall
16-26th June
Other Prince was given into Gloucester custody by Elizabeth Woodville
22nd June announced that the 2 princes were illegitimate since Edward IV was meant to marry eleaner butler
24th June Rivers and Grey were executed for treason
26th June Gloucester took throne as King
