Whole Year Flashcards
name 3 fossil fuels
oil, gas, coal
name 3 renewable energies
wind, solar, hydro
what is an advantage of fossil fuels?
huge amounts of energy is produced
what is an advantage of renewable energy?
better for the enviroment
what is a disadvantage of fossil fuels?
releases greenhouse gases
what is a disadvantage of renewable energy
expensive to set up
if carbon dioxide gas is present..
The limewater will turn cloudy
if oxygen gas is present..
a glowing spint will relight
if hydrogen gas is present
a lit splint will produce a squeeky pop sound.
why is burning fossil fuels bad for the enviroment
burning fossil fuels releases green house gases into the atmosphere, resulting in climate change.
what is complete combustion
when there is a plentiful supply of oxygen. there will be a blue flame and CO2 + H2O will be produced
what is incomplete combustion
when there is a limited supply of oxygen. there will be an orangey red flame produced along with CO+C+H2O
write a balanced formula equation for complete combustion of propane (C3H8)
C3 H8 5O2 —-> 3CO2 + 4H2 4O
what does exothermic mean?
the temperature of the reaction increases
What is the homologous series?
a family of compounds with the same general formula and similar chemical properties
what is a hydrocarbon?
compounds containing hydrogen and carbon only.
