- PL & EL
- Own techincal equipment insurance
- Hired in Equipment insurance
- Fraudulent hire insurance
- Continuing Hire cover
Lets talk about done & drone operators insurance, who are they, what do they do, where, with who, types of equipment associated? Give a explanation of them in general - is it required?
- If a commercial drone operator then require PL insurance for TP property damage and injury.
- What do they do? Aerial photography and videography, survey, mapping, agricultural monitoring, inspections and maintenance, environmental and wildlife monitoring, search & resuce
- Where they work? EVERYWHERE, cities, rural and agricultural, industrial, remove and hazardous & sometimes restricted areas
- So many different types of drones & ranges & cost, e.g. high resolution from 2-8K
- Risks = Operational (technical breakdown & crashes), regulatory and compliance (restricted airspace violation and privacy), cyber security (data breaches with drones transmitting data wirelessly), environmental (wildlife distrubance & fire from battery), financial & business risk (equipment damage/loss), health & safety risk damage (to people and property/ fatigue and overuse)
- Insurance Solutions = Liability, PI, Equipment cover, breakdown, Cyber
- Training is a signficant positive and certification reduces risk
Lets talk about equipment hire comapnies & insurance, who are they, what do they do, where, with who, types of equipment associated? Give a explanation of them in general - is it required?
= Hire specialised equipment and services to production crews for film, TV & media projects.
- Types of rentals: Equipment (cameras, lenses, lighting, audio, drones & cranes), technical support (set up, maintenance and support during rentals), delivery & logistics, consulation services (advice on what is needed)
- Who do they serve? EVERYONE: Production comapnies, freelance film makers, advertising, broadcasters, events & film educational institutions.
- How do they operate? Inventory management, Booking and Scheduling, Transport and Handling, Assitance & training
- What are the risks faced? = Physical damage/loss, (AD or weather, or lost during transport), theft, liability risks, operational decline, reputational damage, unforeseen delays & logistical issues, data security on user data
- What are the insurance solutions? = Equipment insurance, hire-in equipment, Liabilities, BI, BI & Cyber
What are the key questions to ask for equipment hire companies to gain a full understanding of their business?
- Inventory - what do they rent out (cameras, lights, audio), what is the value & how often update or replace items?
- Client demographics - Who are the main clients? What is the typical duration of the rental period? is it local or international?
- Operational - do you handle logistics, do you require clients to have their own insurance? KEY
- Safety & maintenance - how often do you test/inspect equipment, do you provide technical support for the use of the equipment?
- Claims - any past claims etc.
- Cyber - do you store the client data on rented equipment e.g. audio/visiual files & what do you have in place to prevent breaches
What is a film maker? What are their responsibilities?
= Anyone who creates visual productions e.g. documentaries, short films, feature films, or other forms.
-> Often responsible for all aspects of the film from beginning to end e.g. creative, technical and logistical from concept development to post-production & distribution
What are the different roles in filmmaking? Explain what each of them do
- Director (creative lead responsible for overall vision and creative decisions)
- Producer (manages production process, finances, schedules & coordination)
- Screenwriter (script, story & characters)
- Cinematographer (DOP) - Oversees visual aspects of the film, e.g. camera, lighting
- Editor - Assembles raw footage into cohesive narrative
- Production Designer (responsible for the visual environment: sets, costumes, props)
- Sound designer
8 Actors
What are some questions to ask film makers to assess their risk (think more relevant to the short-period policies)
- About Project and Production e.g. length, what type, where, when, any high risk scenes
- Crew & Equipment e.g. how many, own equipment or renting, freelancers and are they covered?
- Liability and Safety e.g. any stunts of high risk scenes, have you hired and H&S professionals and have risk assessments been carried out/any animals or minors involved?
- Post Production & Data Security e.g. How will footage be backed up
- Intellectual Property e.g. are there any licensed music, footage or intellectual property elements being used that need clearance, have you obtained all neccessary rights/clearances for shoot
- Contingency Plans e.g. are there plans for unforeseen delays e.g. weather & illness
What activites do film students do?
= All -> Anything from pre-production (planning, writing, scouting locations, production (filming), post-production (editing/special effects & sound design) & group projects
What sort of equipment will a film student use?
- Cameras
- Sound
- Lighting
- Editing
- additional props costumes
What sort of risks are faced by film students?
What are the insurance solutions for them?
Equipment damage/theft, injury to cast & crew, public and data loss, intellectural property and reputation.
1. Equipment insurance
2. PL
3. Personal Accident insurance
4. E&O
5. Short-Term production insurance e.g. shorter term as budgets lower
What are the sort of questions an insurance broker would ask a film student when enquiring about their insurance?
Project - what is it, how long, are there multiple and any high risk activites/locations
Equipment - Are you using own equipment, borrowing from school or renting? What is the value & how is it being stored?
Location - where, off campus and in public spaces? do you have permission?
Cast & Crew Safety - who is inovled? Will you be working with anyone not in the film school? Are you taking H&S precautions e.g. not shooting at night and no heavy equipment?
Future plans - where/what will happen to the film?
What does a production company do?
Oversee entire production process from concept development through to distribution, managing both creative and logistical aspects of a project:
1. Development - planning phase, selecting scripts, funding
2. Pre-Production - organises logistics, crew members, equipment and finalises locations, contracts are established with all parties involved
3. Production - filming phase e.g. actual capture of footage
4. Post-Prod - editing, sound design, visual effects and colour grading
5. Distribution - release it e.g. streaming platforms, direct distribution
Who does a film/media production company work with?
Depends on the project but effectively everyone they need! e.g. directors, producers, cast, distributors, vendors etc.
What are the most prominent risks facing production companies?
- Property damage - filming on location or expensive camera equipment
- Theft/Loss of Equipment -
- Injury to cast crew & potentially public
- Production Delays - Weather, cast illness and equipment failure
- Data Loss - following productino
What are some factors which exacerbate the risks faced by production companies?
- Size - higher budget, more elaborate sets, more complex scenes carry operational and financial risks
- Use of stunts - e.g. fire, objects
- Remove or hazardous filming locations
- Multiple locations/international filming
- Tight schedules - increase pressure on casts and crew leading to potential oversight in safety or preparation
What types of questions should you ask a production comapany to understand its needs?
- Project, what are you working on?, budget and high risk elements?
- Location and plans? Where, permits, anything out of ordinary
- Cast crew, how many, are they training, any key cast members? what H&S in place?
- Equipment, using own, renting or both? what is value, how will it be stored? any props, costumes which are difficult to replace/
- How is the data stored and backed up? Any IP (intellectual property) risks associated?
- Any plans for things to go wrong?
What is a digital imaging technician?
Member of the film crew who manages all data on set and post-production. Often advises DOP on lighting, contrast etc.
What is a post-production house?
Specialises in finalising media projects, e.g. films and commercials through editing the raw footage with effects, sound design and colour grading & digital mastering
Roughly describe how post-production houses work
- Specialised staff and facilities - inhouse team or hired in, highly trained
- Collaboration with clients, receive feedback and ensure project aligns with client’s vision
- High-end software, advanced programmes to handle and change the files
- Secure file management, ensuring safe transfer of the digital files is crucial, with extensive back-ups and secuirty systems to prevent loss
