Name/Synonyms: formerly known as Renesio di canale, which morphed into arnesio.
Colour: White #14
Region: Piedmont DOCG Roero Arneis, province of Cuneo on the left side of the Tanaro river. The top cru is Bric Renesio, Casrenllinaldo, Canale. Doc Langhe, Terre Alfieri. Some IGT’s in Sardinia.
Blending partners: used to be added to barbera and nebbiolo.
Family/closely related:
Style: formerly sweet, now dry, straw green with aromas of white flowers, pear, chamomile, peach and apricot, sweet almond and creamy on the palate.
Biotypes & Clones: 6 clones available.
Noteworthy characteristics: disease-prone, sensitive to pests which cause grey rot faster. Med sized bunches and berries, pyramid-conical, bunches and berries are compact. Does well in porous soil with sand and chalk. Tends to oxidize easily so best to work with reductive wine making. Drops it’s acidity quick

DOCG/DOC – DOC etna Bianco (60% blended with Cataratto), DOC Etna Bianco superiore.
Blending partners: cataratto and Chardonnay, minnella. Doc Sicily, 5 IGTs.
Family/closely related
Style: Dry with high acid and mineral flavours, lemony with green apples, and orange blossom
Biotypes & Clones: 2 clones, 2 biotypes A & B.
Noteworthy characteristics: High quality potential, med- large bunches, tick skins, high yield, disease susceptible. Does well in high altitude on volcanic soil. High acidity due to high malic acid.

Name/Synonyms: Catarratto Bianco Lucido, Vrancu, Catarattedu, catarrattu lu nostrum, distinct from carricante but sometime called that.

Region: Sicily (most planted white in sicily, 2nd most planted in Italy).
DOCG/DOC: DOC’s Alcamo 60%min, Contea Sclafani 50%, Monreale 50%, Santa Margherita del belice 50-70%, Sciacca 70%, Etna.
Blending partners: grillo, Carricante
Family/closely related: Moscato di Allessandria & Cataratto are the parent of Grillo, parent off-spring relationship with gargenega.
Style: medium full body, best from hillsides, intense aromas of sage and thyme with banana and pineapple. Used in Marsala.
Biotypes & Clones: Lots of clones, biotypes are Spargolo & serrato, Lucido- the best (higher acid, lower sugar), better then commune.
Noteworthy characteristics: Higher in sugar and lower in acid. Odium resistantance. Fuller in body.

Region: Piemont from asti to Alessandria.
DOCG/DOC: DOCG Gavi di gavi – rovereto sub-zone is grand cru. Doc Cortese dell’alto Monferrato, cortese di monferrato casalese, oltrepo Pavese Lombardy, DOC garda cortese (Veneto).

Style: High acid, minerality, ageworthy, with delicate white flowers, and herbal nuances crisp & dry.
Biotypes & Clones: 75 biotypes and 30 clones.
Noteworthy characteristics: High in quality, high yielding but good table wines, cold weather resistant, susceptible to grey rot, thin skins. Larger bunches with med-large berries, good vigour, mid sept ripener.

Region: Campania, some also grown in Sicily, Puglia, Tuscany.
DOCG DOC: DOCG Fiano di Avellino, DOC Sannio fiano, best sub zones – lapio & Montefalcone (clay dominant), Cesinali & Santo Stefano del sole (sand rich).
Blending partners: Greco, coda di volpe, trebbiano toscana
Family/closely related
Style: light-full bodied, dry to sweet, easy going and age worthy, late harvest and air dried. Typical flavour profile of hazelnut, green apple, pear, and honey. Sweeter wines show citrus, dried apricot, dried figs, honey and have higher terpenes, such as nerol, and geraniol (orange flowers) and lactones such as y-declactone (coconut). y-decalactone (apricot).
Biotypes & Clones:
Noteworthy characteristics: med berries, small compact bunches with thick skins, botrytis resistant, but sensitive to odium and peronospora. Does best on volcanic soils.

Region: Veneto
DOCG/DOC: DOCG Soave & Gambellara most famous, DOC Bianco di Custoza are noteworthy, sweet wines from Recioto di Soave, & Recioto di Gambellare. Also found in Lombardy, Emilia Romagna, Lazio, Umbria, and Sicily – best are DOC Alcamo, delia nivolelli, doc contessa entellina.
Blending partners: Trebbiano di soave (Verdicchio), Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc.
Family/closely related: related to trebbiano Toscano, albana, mostosa, malvasia Bianca di candia, marzemina Bianca, catarratto commune, Greco del pollino
Style: dry wines have bright white flower, apricot, and fresh citru aromas, with golden delicious apple. Sweet ones are rich and honeyed and floral, Gambellara are more oxidative and mineral.
Biotypes & Clones: lots of biotypes, gargenega typical, gargenega di Dario, garganega verde, garganega agostega, grecanico dorato. 14 clones.
Noteworthy characteristics: late ripener, very vigourous, large + very large bunches, thin skins. Sensitive to disease and cold.

Name/Synonyms: Serpino, Prosecco, Prosecco tondo. One variety subdivided into 3 clones, Prosecco tondo bianco, Prosecco lungo, Prosecco nostrano (distinct variety, same as malvasia bianco lunga). Lots of other names beginning with Prosecco or glera.

DOCG/DOC: DOCG conegliano-Valdobbiadene (Cartizze grand cru), Asolo-Prosecco, Colli di Conegliano, DOC Prosecco, Colli Euganei Serprino, Colli Asolani Prosecco, and around Treviso, plus 14 IGTs. As well is Friuli Venezia Giulia, and Lombardy around Bergamo

Albana
Name/Synonyms: name derived from Colli Albani. 5 recognized biotypes all named by Albana.. della Bargona, della Compadrona, della gaiana, della Serra, della Forcella, gentile di Bertinoro.
Colour: White #04 – Fleshy full bodied and tannic, pears plus acacia, aromatic herbs and exotic fruit, easy to oxidize, ‘a red wine in whites clothing’.. Also makes passito wine
Region DOCG/DOC: Albana di Romagna, Italy’s first DOCG for white. Albana passito for air-dried wines.
Albarola

Albarola
Name/Synonyms: Bianchetta Genovese, in Liguria Biachetta, Val polcevera, Rivera di Levante, in Tuscany – Erbarola, Erbarola Trebbiana. Confused with Trebbiano Toscano. Distinct from Albarola di Lavagna.
Colour: white #8, Bianchetta Genovese #26 – high in acid with fresh citrus, delicate almond, minty saline, edge, best to drink young. Blended with vermentino 7 Bosco
Region DOCG/DOC: Liguria, Tuscany, Doc Cinque Terre, Colli di Luni. 100% in DOC Golfo del tigullio (dry passito), Doc val Polcevera (subzone Coronata). One grand cru is Liguria’s Missano area.

Ansonica/Inzolia
Name/Synonyms: Inzolia in Sicily. Genetic similarity to Rhoditis, Sideritis. And closely related to Frappato, Giillo, Nerello Mascallese.
Colour: White #13 – Med-full bodied, golden hue, herbal, yello apple & dried apricot, saline personality, fleshy, tannic, low acid.
Region DOCG/DOC: In Sicily around Palermo, Caltanissetta, Agrigento, included in most DOCs, Alcamo, Contessa Entellina, Delia Nivolelli. In Tuscany DOC Costa dell’ Argentario. 22 DOCs in total.
Asprinio Bianco

Asprinio Bianco
Name/Synonyms: Asprinio, some morphologic similarity to Greco. Used to be known in Puglia as Olivese or Ragusano.
Colour: White #16 very high in acid and characterized by pretty, very delicatecitrusy, spicy and almond notes, long zing. Can be produced as sparkling.
Region DOCG/DOC: Campania, Puglia, Basilicata. Grows around the area north of naples. Doc Asprinio d’Aversa which is the grand cru. Sparkling from Doc Aspirino, d’versa Spumante.

Name/Synonym: Pagadebito, Pacioccone, Cacchione, Pampanaro, Arciprete (2 biotypes), Uva Pantastic (ancestor), distinct from Uva Pane
Colour: White #23 – Luscious texture, juicy acid, honey & citrus, tropical fruit, natural high acidity. Produces both dry and sweet wines. Best soild are volcanic.
Region: Lazio, DOGC Cannellino di Frascati, frascati Superiore + 5 DOCs. Best examples are 100% from IGT Cori

Name/Synonym: jancolella, Janculilla, Capri, Procida
Colour: White #29 – good aging potential, golden tinghe, med acidity with white flowers & Tyme, fresh herbs, mint, grapefruit, pineapple, and a saline quality. Thrives on Volcanic tufa, rich in suplur, magnesium & iron.
Region DOCG/DOC: Campagnia, DOC Ischia Biancolella, grand cru is the Frassitelli vineyard 600m. Doc Costa d’Almalfi, Penisola Sorrentina. Some IGTs in Puglia.

Name/Synonym: long misidentified as Mostosa, Trebbiano Abruzzese, Ottones (Lazio) related to bambino Nero
Colour: White 32 –in Puglia it’s best quality, creamy, almonds, aniseed, apricot, tropical fruit, in Lazio, thin & herbal plus lemony.
Region DOCG/DOC: Puglia, Emilia-Romagna, Marche, Campania, Lazio, Sardinia, Umbria. DOC Puglia – Cacc’e’Mmitte di Lucera, DOC castel del Monte, DOC San server, Abruzzo DOC –Trebbiano d’abruzzo, ER – Colli della Romagna Centrale, Pagedebit di Romagna, Lazio DOCG – Frascati, Frascati Cannellino.
Bosco

Name/Synonym: madea, Villa of Marchesi Durazzo of Genoa where it was first brought to Cinque Terre
Colour: White #016. High suhar, low acid, greater body, when sweet wines displace honeyed, apricot jam and dried figs, herbal, hazelnut & Toffee. Monovarietals are mineral, with higher acid, and yellow fruit. ‘Red grape in white clothing’.
Region DOC/ DOCG: Liguria, DOC Cinque Terre, Val Polcevera, Colline di levanto, Sciacchetra – mostly sweet /air dried. Blended with Albarola, and Vermentino.
