White Blood Cells And Immunity Flashcards
What is a pathogen
A microorganism that causes disease
What are the two types of white blood cell?
Phagocytes and lymphocytes
What is the job of the immune system?
To destroy pathogens in your body.
What does non-specific mean, in terms of white blood cells?
That they attack anything that’s detected as ‘foreign’
Are phagocytes specific or non-specific?
Non-specific
What do phagocytes do?
Detect ‘foreign’ things in the body and engulf and digest them.
What do lymphocytes produce?
Antibodies
What is an antigen?
A unique molecule on the surface of a pathogen.
Are lymphocytes specific or non-specific?
Specific
What do lymphocytes do?
They detect foreign antigens and then produce proteins called antibodies which mark them out to be destroyed by other white blood cells. The antibodies produced are specific and will only target that type of antigen.
What are memory cells?
Lymphocytes that stay in the body after original infection has been fought off. They can reproduce very fast if the same antigen enters the body a second time.
