Where did Jesus Say "I am god, worship me" Flashcards
Where did Jesus say “I am God, worship me?”
This is the “exact words” or “exact criterion” fallacy
It sets a criterion for christ’s divinity, which Christ himself did not set. It is trying to prove God by man’s standards
Also, this criteria, if applied consistently can also be used to disprove Islam, but Muslims don’t apply this consistently, because it is not a question that is meant to get to the truth, but rather to confuse people
Response to the exact words criterion challenge
Muslims believe that Jesus is a mere prophet and not God, so apply the exact criterion challenge to them, to show them that demanding the exact words is absurd
“I will be happy to show you where Jesus said “I am God worship me”, if you will show me where he said “I’m only a prophet, don’t worship me” in those exact words, and if you can’t show me in those exact words, then the Islamic view of Jesus must be false”.
And
“Where did Jesus say, “I am the virgin-born son of Mary” in those exact words if you can’t show me in those exact words. You can use the bible or the Koran, but I want those exact words or it is false?”
A more reasonable question would be “Where and how did Jesus claim to be God?”
A more reasonable question
Where and how did Jesus claim to be God?
The problem of reinterpretation
If you show a Muslim passages of where Jesus claimed to be God, they will reinterpret those passages and say that it does not proof divinity
Claims that only Allah can make
- The claim to have created the universe
- The claim to be the First and the Last (Sura 57:3, Isaiah 44:6)
- The claim to be able to forgive sins (Sura 3:135, Psalm 51:4)
- The claim to be man’s final judge (Sura 22:56=57, Joel 3:12, Psalm 9:7-8)
- The claim to be the truth (sura 22:6, psalm 31:5)
- The claim to be able to raise the dead (Sura 22:7, 1 Samuel 2:6)
7 The claim to not share His glory (Sura 57:1, Isaiah 32:8)
Jesus claims to be the First and the Last
Revelation 1: 17-18
“When I saw HIm, I fell at His feet like a dead man. And He placed His right hand on me saying “Do not be afraid; I am the first and the last 18 and the Living One; and I was dead, and behold, I am alive forevermore, and I have the keys of death and of Hades.”
Jesus claims to be able to forgive sins
Mark 2:5-12
5 When Jesus saw their faith, he said to the paralyzed man, “Son, your sins are forgiven.”
6 Now some teachers of the law were sitting there, thinking to themselves, 7 “Why does this fellow talk like that? He’s blaspheming! Who can forgive sins but God alone?”
8 Immediately Jesus knew in his spirit that this was what they were thinking in their hearts, and he said to them, “Why are you thinking these things? 9 Which is easier: to say to this paralyzed man, ‘Your sins are forgiven,’ or to say, ‘Get up, take your mat and walk’? 10 But I want you to know that the Son of Man has authority on earth to forgive sins.” So he said to the man, 11 “I tell you, get up, take your mat and go home.” 12 He got up, took his mat and walked out in full view of them all. This amazed everyone and they praised God, saying, “We have never seen anything like this!”
Jesus claims to be the final judge of all people
Matthew 25: 31-32
31 “When the Son of Man comes in his glory, and all the angels with him, he will sit on his glorious throne. 32 All the nations will be gathered before him, and he will separate the people one from another as a shepherd separates the sheep from the goats.
Jesus claims to be the truth
John 14:6
“I am the way, and the truth, and the life; no one comes to the Father but through me”
Jesus claims to raise the dead
John 5:25-29
25 Very truly I tell you, a time is coming and has now come when the dead will hear the voice of the Son of God and those who hear will live. 26 For as the Father has life in himself, so he has granted the Son also to have life in himself. 27 And he has given him authority to judge because he is the Son of Man.
28 “Do not be amazed at this, for a time is coming when all who are in their graves will hear his voice 29 and come out—those who have done what is good will rise to live, and those who have done what is evil will rise to be condemned.
John 11:25
“Jesus said to her. “I am the resurrection and the life; he who believes in Me will live even if he dies”
Jesus claims to share in the Glory of God.
John 17:5
“Now, Father, glorify Me together with Yourself, with the glory which I had with You before the world was.
Jesus claims to be Lord of the Sabbath
Matthew 12:8
“For the Son of Man is Lord of the Sabbath”
Thomas declares that Jesus is God, and addresses Him as such
John 20:27-29
27Then Jesus said to Thomas, “Put your finger here and look at My hands. Reach out your hand and put it into My side. Stop doubting and believe.” 28Thomas replied, “My Lord and my God!” 29Jesus said to him, “Because you have seen Me, you have believed; blessed are those who have not seen and yet have believed.”
