When Will There Be Good News? Flashcards
Reggie saving a life
“April Violet” as Reggie ate “violet cream” beforehand which saved Jackson’s life rather than some “burly paramedic”
Louise not letting go
“Happy Meals” beyond the call of duty with guilt. She groups Dr Hunter in as part of “Survivors of disasters.” and as “her lady”
Reggie’s clues to the case
“without getting changed.” and her “car was in the garage.”
Jackson’s dishonest loving
“going the right way” and “going home.” with reference to Tessa and Louise. A “day” after finding out Louise was getting married, he proposes to Tessa.
Jackson’s psychological struggle
“wasn’t his” was the baby, yes? He hears the voice of Julia like “God’s sake, Jackson, give it a rest.” and Josie’s “voice” call him an “idiot.” The two voices that “lived uncomfortably in his brain.” Also linked to Christian doctrine that they are “twin recording angels.” “I cut mine arm, and with my proper blood assure my soul to be great Lucifer’s” showing that he’s giving up judgement. This comes from Doctor Faustus where he commits to eternal damnation. This character falls from his greatness out of greed but Jackson lacks it in comparison and acts according to lust. Pathos.
Jackson’s pitiful mantra
“He was going the wrong way” “For I am wanton and lascivious and cannot live without a wife,”
Jackson’s sister
“raped and murdered” was his sister. He praised “low-heeled sandals” worn by Tessa that she could flee in. He calls Billy a “little fucker” for not wanting to “look after” his sister.
Reggie’s suffering
“no one to say goodbye,” but made worse with “no one to say hello.” She tried to make up with Billy having “cooked” for him but is dismissed with “this and that.”
The Needler case
David Needler took his gun and “shot” his “mother-in-law” and “Aunt Debbie.” the daughter had “mopped” the dead Aunt with “Unicorn Magic napkins,” on her “birthday”
The Decker case
“her mother wasn’t screaming at the man, she was screaming at her.” and her “strong legs” show that Joanna loves her mother. However, the man using the “knife” drew out her “blood” and continued this “carving,” The verb “cut” could link to the theme of a “harvest” as the chapter title
Reggie’s clues to her case
She liked “Dicken’s novels,” because they often were about the struggles of “orphans.” It was shown that “Reggie knew that journey all too well.” This gives the hint of her tragic past as a clue for our detective minds.
The start of the train tension
People “fastidiously ignoring” the drunk guy on the floor but from this comedy comes the tense contrast of Jackson’s recollection of “guilt” from a similar event where he wrongly assumed a critically injured person to be drunk.
The middle of the train tension
Feeling the “jolts”, smelling the “burning” and “chemical”, hearing the “high-pitched shrieking” all to achieve imagery of “hell”
The end of the train tension
When a man cried for help, like the “sheepdog” that he is, he tries to rescue him with “Pavlovian” instinct.
Jackson is no shepherd
He couldn’t get past the sheep so he considers “the ethics of punching it.” “It resisted, leaning its stupid weight against his.” Nothing is going his way and this comedy creates pathos.
