Q

Give one metaphor in this poem and the meaning …

“brain”

A

“Before my pen has glean’d my teeming brain”

This linguistic device implies Keats emotions, it is metaphorically describing how he is almost not prepared to die, knowing from the past that many of his family members have died at quite a young age, he is implying that his brain is “teeming” with information that is ready to be revealed, the gerund verb, “teeming” means that something is filled with, which reinforces the idea that he isn’t prepared to die yet, given that his brain is flooded with ideas and information ready to almost poured out.

Q

Give a simile in the poem that links with “teeming” metaphor

“Ripe” what is the meaning ?

A

“Like rich garners” and the “full ripened grain”

Keats has used a simile here to describe the idea of the ripeness of his ideas. A “garner” is somewhere where grains are stored in preservation, by Keats describing these preserved grains as “ripened” this immediately depicts that his ideas are full and ripe, ready to be collected by people. This analogy helps to highlight the importance of Keats statement that very soon people need to take into consideration of his ideas.

Q

Give another way in which Keats portrays that he isn’t ready to pass away yet . Relationship wise ? What does it mean

A

“Feel fair creatures of an hour”

The fricative of the f almost denotes that he has repeatedly been through relationships several times throughout his life; however hasn’t truly been in an intimate relationship yet. Perhaps this implicitly depicts that he hasn’t yet reached maturity yet, given that he was still young when writing this poem, perhaps this is reminiscent of the idea that he isn’t again ready to die yet.

Q

Describe briefly why the stanzas are represented like this?

A

The poem as a whole almost is presented out like his life, it is written in 3 quatrains about his life stages describing bits of information throughout his life life, with the last two lines almost acting like his death and the rhyming couplets emphasising that he will be remembered, however nothing notable will happen given that he has made it short with two lines only.

Q

What may be the purpose of Keats using iambic pentameter in his poem?

A

The 10 syllables may reinforce the tone of the poem and how monotone and dull his life was, always following the same routine, no highs and lows throughout his life.
