What Words Mean Flashcards
Heteroatom
Anything other than H and O
Volatile?
How readily a substance vaporizes
Saturated vs. Unsaturated molecule?
High substituted molecule?
Inductrion
A change in electron density due to electron-withdrawing or donating groups on the molecule.
what fragments are shown on mass spec?
Only fragments with a charge
More resonance makes the molecule more or less stable?
More
More stable equals lower or higher energy?
Lower
Increased pi bonds (density) indicates…
Increased frequance
NH2 shifts oxygen connected higher or lower on IR??
Lower!
Homotopic
Can be exchanged by both rotation and mirror plane. Always chemically equivalent. Usually a carbon with two H and both other substituents are exact
Enantiotopic
Can only exchange through mirror images but are not identical. Always chemically equivalent in achiral environment. When an H is replaced with a Z it makes a chiral centre
Diastereotopic
Cannot exchange through any symmetry element. When an H is changed to Z it makes a chiral centre and there is already and chiral centre present in the molecule
