What to do when Little or No Change Occurs Flashcards
Goal or Objectives Did NOT Address the Problem
Troubleshoot and reinforce how to overcome
the problem
Modify Expectations
• Focus on a strategy for actively prompting the
individual to perform the behavior
• Increase the likelihood that the behavior will
occur by pinpointing a behavior closely related
to the one you wish to alter but which
precedes, or occurs more frequently than the
behavior you wish to modify
Rech
- Recheck the stage of readiness
-Failure to Identify Potential Barriers
Changing Antecedents
Behavior change may be enhanced by changing antecedents
– Employing new antecedents
– Removing antecedents that promoted the old
behavior – Rearranging and controlling antecedents can be
useful in promoting behavior change by changing
the course of events
(first you eat breakfast, then you can have coffee)
Changing Consequences
Behavior change may be enhanced by changing consequences
– Employing new desirable consequences
– Employing new undesirable consequences Remember: generally, the consequences immediately following a behavior are considered to be the most important factors influencing the strength of that behavior.
Changing Reinforcers Material, Activity or Social
• Check reinforcement procedures • Reinforcers have to have positive
consequences for the individual seeking to
change • Reinforcers must be relatively strong • Reinforcers must be accessible • Reinforcers lose effectiveness over time.
Monitor & change reinforcers as needed.
Punishment Decreases or Inhibits Behavior Change
• Usually results in avoidance of the punishing person • Negative emotional side effects • Punishment is only effective as long as someone is around to administer the punishment • Not enthusiastically followed • Rarely works in healthcare
Monitoring & Modifying the Plan
• Regularly check progress • Identify if objectives have been met • Do not proceed until success has been achieved • May need to alter the goal or objectives
