What makes a good song?
“When studying your unit on songs you learned that each song needed each of four aspects: Riffs, Structure, Lyrics, Melody
What do good songs need?
Good songs need a rocking riff
What will good songs have?
Good songs will have a catchy melody or rhythm that ‘sticks in your head’ and therefore help you to remember the song.
What is a riff?
A riff is the name given to the repeated pattern that occurs within a song.
What do good songs need?
A rocking riff, a sturdy structure, luminous lyrics, a memorable melody.
What kind of a structure will good songs need?
Good songs need a simple but well organised structure.
What features are in a Chorus?
Focal point or climax of the song. Lyrics are usually the same each time often containing the song title.
What are the features of a verse?
Alternates with the Chorus in a song. Tells ‘the story’, or narrative, of the song. There are usually 2-3 in each song.
What are the features of the instrumental section of a song?
Has no singing, just instruments. Provides a change from the singing.
What features are in the pre-Chorus of a song?
Links the verse and the Chorus. Not found in all songs.
What features are in a bridge/middle 8 of a song?
Contrasting vocal section. Usually appears only once, towards the middle of the song.
What does the intro feature in a song?
Opening section of the song. Normally instrumental.
Just as music is structured in different sections, how are words divided?
Just as music is structured in different sections, so words are divided into verses normally with a chorus which will be heard more than once. Lyrics as well as music, therefore, can help us understand song structure.
What is the hook?
The Hook is a phrase that catches the attention of the listener and its words are usually used for the song title.
What is the outro of a song?
The outro is the ending, or final section. A made up word meaning the opposite if intro. It can also be called the coda.
