What are percussion instruments?
Percussion instruments are anything that can be hit, scraped or shaken.
What is done to many percussion instruments?
Many percussion instruments are tuned which means they can play melodies as well as rhythms.
Hat have composers written?
Composers have written parts for some very unusual percussion objects including: a broken grandfather clock, a fire extinguisher, a chainsaw, roasting tins, smashing plates into a dustbin, bouncing a ping pong ball in a beaker and hitting a gong in a fish tank!
What is the percussion section kind of?
The special effects department of the orchestra
What do percussionists play?
Anything they can hit, from instruments that you might have at school like glockenspiels, xylophones, triangles, tambourines, to church bells, wind machines and even bits of old car
What does the percussion section help?
They help keep the orchestra in time
Where do the percussionists sit?
Right at the back so that their sound doesn’t overpower everything else
What would it be like if you took away the percussion?
Watching an action film but without all the explosions and the flashes and the bangs, they’re very important
How big is the percussion family?
It is massive
What does the percussion family evolve?
Anything you can hit
What is the percussionists jobs?
To keep time and the other one is to add colour
What does the tamtam have?
Tremendous sustain, it’s a very large instrument and you play it with a big stick
What kind of sizes to percussion instruments come in?
Lots of different sizes
What size are cowbells?
You can get really big ones and really small ones
What kind of an instrument is a triangle?
Quite a sustaining instrument
