What led Richard III to carry out such extreme actions to become king? Flashcards
What had Richard III been like during Edward IV’s reign?
loyal brother compared to Clarence
What did Richard III feel it was his dead brother’s will for him to be?
What other factors was he motivated by in wanting this position?
protector
didn’t want Woodville’s having so much power over Edward V
What motivated RIII to continue to try to prevent Edward V from being crowned king after the arrest of Ev’s uncle?
knew EV would take revenge for treatment of his uncle
What does RIII try to get Anthony Woodville accused of?
treason for having played a part in death of Edward IV by encouraging him to drink excessively
Why did Richard III turn against Hastings and have him murdered?
Hasting’s entire remit = honouring EIV’s wishes - wouldn’t have been EIV’s wish for Woodville’s to be put on trial and executed or stopping his sons from inheriting the throne. Lord Hastings was beginning to see that RIII’a behaviour was suspect and that RIII perhaps had designs on the throne
Effect of the murder of Hastings?
act of terror - scared nobility - worried the same fate would befall them
Example of a law violated by the killing of lord Hastings in the manner that it happened?
nobility have right to trial by peers - lord Hastings had no real trial before his execution
What was an oversight on the part of EIV?
that he did not make his side of the family much of a part of his son Edward V’s life - one of reasons why RIII had designs of throne was because felt Woodville’s influence over EV = too great
