What is static electricity? Flashcards
What is static electricity?
A build-up of charge on insulating materials due to friction.
How is static electricity produced?
When insulating materials rub, electrons may be ‘picked up’ by one material from another.
material that loses electrons becomes positively charged, while the material that gains electrons becomes negatively charged.
What happens when a static object comes near another object but does not touch it? Why does this happen?
The objects will experience either an electrostatic ATTRACTIVE force if they are oppositely charged or an electrostatic REPULSIVE force if they have the same charge.
What is an electric field?
A region around a charged object that determines how it interacts with other charged objects.
What is a static spark?
Object with surplus of electrons comes close to object with less, electrons jump to where they are less
