Structural View
Sees us as entirely shaped by the structure of society. We behave according to societies norms and expectations. Macro We are manipulated by society.
The Social Action View
We have free will. Micro.
Functionalist
Society is held together by a shared culture, consensus, We all have a function.
Marxist
Disagree with functionalist, society is based on class conflict not consensus, society is divided into two classes, the bourgeoisie and the proletariat
Bourgeoisie
Minority capital class, own means of production, manipulate the working class
Proletariat
Majority working class, own nothing but their own labour which they have to sell to the bourgeoisie in order to survive.
Feminist
Agree with Marxists that there are fundamental divisions and conflicts in society, but they see gender rather than class as the most important division.
Modern Society
An urban industrial society with social technological change and a belief in progress and science.
Post modern Society
A post-industrial society in which change is increasingly rapid but uneven, where people have lost faith in the ability of science to bring about science.
