What is social psychology?
The scientific study of how thoughts feelings and behaviour of individuals are influenced by the actual imagined or implied presence of others.
What is a heuristic?
Making quick decisions (social judgements) about things with less effort.
Has evolutionary functions, decisions made due to previous schemas.
What is an availability heuristic?
Make a decision based on the first thing that comes to mind.
What is a representativeness heuristic?
Make social judgements based on the extent to which the current person or events characteristics resemble the characteristics of a stored schema.
What is the false consensus effect?
The tendency to assume others behaviour or think as we do a greater extent than is actually true.
What is planning falacy?
Tendency to make optimistic prediction concerning how long a task will take.
What is automatic vigilance?
People generally notice negative stimuli more than positive stimuli. Can be linked to evolution in which negative stimuli in the environment more important to notice.
