What is perception (ch.1) Flashcards
bottom up processing
using sensory info around you to come to a conclusion
top down processing
using existing knowledge to interpret sensory info
psychophysical approach
series of theories about the relationship between the physical and mental processing. how our sensory systems function
physiological approach
relationship between a stimulus and the neural mechanisms that process them
detection
method for detecting thresholds
method of limits (absolute threshold)
present stimuli in increments going up or down. find crossover point
method of adjustment (absolute threshold)
playing varying intensities until it can barely be noticed
method of constant stimuli (absolute threshold)
present stimuli in random intensities until it is noticed 50% of the time
difference threshold
whether or not the difference between 2 stimuli are noticed
webers law
each stimulus has a certain amount of change needed before it is noticed. Ie. electric shock: 1%, light 8%
subliminal perception
below threshold but still picked up by receptors
stevens power law
magnitude estimation
-magnitude of a stimulation is increased or decreased but is perceived by us as a fraction of the real change
Responsive compression
to perceive light as being changed it needs to be 8-9 times brighter. we compress it to not see as big of a change
responsive expansion
1% change in electric shock is perceived as a 10% increase
