ODR stands for Online Dispute Resolution.
It is just another form of ADR but this happens online.
why choose ODR?
- It allows many different people to access justice using 23 different languages.
- Her Majesty’s Online Court (HMOC) uses online judges to sort cases

what is the three-tier system in ODR?
The three tier system is the sorting system used in ODR. It is used so that each online case is sorted by the needs of the case, after its initial evaluation.
tier one: “online evaluation”
tier two: “online facilitation”
tier three: “online judges”
explain tier one of the three tier system
Online Evaluation:
The evaluation helps categorize a users complaints. this then makes the user aware of their rights and responsibilities while also understanding the rights available to them

Online Facilitation:
The facilitators find a speedy and fair conclusion to your case without involving judges. they communicate through the internet using mediation/negotiation wherever necessary. they may also use telephone conferencing software to sort out any issues to do with the case.

Online Judges:
Full/part-time judges will look at each individual case and solve the cases that require their intervention. All necessary documents are sent to them electronically. Telephone conferencing software will be used when necessary.
give an example of ODR
Financial Ombudsman:
They resolve disputes between consumers and UK-based financial establishments quickly and with minimal formality. The complaints are all required to be dealt with adequately by at least 8 weeks if the compliant being registered.
advantages of ODR
- gives justice to those that cannot afford to go to court
- it is both cheaper for the legal system and those involved in the cases
disadvantages of ODR
- you must have access to adequate technology to participate
- less personal as the parties are not in the same room
- those with language difficulties may find it difficult to participate
