What is narrative?
Narrative is writing that connects ideas, concepts or events.
What are three important aspects of narration in storytelling?
- It connects events, showing their patterns, relating them to ideas or themes.
- A practice & art in that when telling a story, we shape the narrative.
- Narrating a story involved shaping events around a set of aims or effects.
What is descriptive narrative?
Connects imagery, ideas, and details to convey a sense of time and place.
What is the purpose of descriptive narrative?
- To create a sense of setting, time and place.
- To convey the mood or tone of the time & place
What is the viewpoint narrative?
A section of narration that helps us understand the POV of the narrating character.
What is the purpose of viewpoint narration?
Presents events or scenes to us so we understand the through the narrators’ feelings, desires, or values.
What is omniscient narration?
The POV of multiple characters is shared in a single scene.
What is limited narration?
Narration told through a single person’s eyes.
How does viewpoint narrative have power?
It dictates how we interpret a story because we experience things the way the narrator does.

A narrative that recounts past events.
What is the purpose of historical narrative?
It shows the historical process - linking causation from event to event
What is typical of historical narrative?
A sense of cause and effect, long stretches of time condensed.

Where events are told in the order they happened.

What is the purpose of linear narrative?
Shows causation clearly, creates the ‘texture of a well-lived life’.
