Shenkman identifies five defining characteristics of (civic or political) stupidity. What are
they? Please define and give an example of each. Which are you guilty of? Which do you
think is most pervasive and/or problematic in the United States today? Why?
Rick Shenkman, in his book Just How Stupid Are We?, identifies five defining characteristics of civic or political stupidity. Here they are, along with definitions and examples:
Sheer Ignorance: This refers to a lack of knowledge about critical facts and events in the news, as well as an understanding of how the government functions and who is in charge.
Example: Not knowing the names of key political figures or the basic structure of the government.
Negligence: This is the failure to seek out necessary information or to stay informed about important issues.
Example: Ignoring news about significant policy changes that could affect one’s life.
Woodenheadedness: This involves holding onto beliefs despite clear evidence that they are wrong.
Example: Believing in a debunked conspiracy theory even after being presented with factual information.
Shortsightedness: This is the inability to foresee the long-term consequences of actions or policies.
Example: Supporting policies that provide immediate benefits but have detrimental long-term effects, like unsustainable tax cuts.
Boneheadedness: This is acting on impulse without considering the consequences.
Example: Voting for a candidate based on a single issue without understanding their overall platform or policies
Two principles fundamental to the U.S. system of government are separation of powers
and checks and balances. Please define and give multiple, concrete examples of each concept
to illustrate your understanding
