What is civics?
“Civics is the study of how public decisions are made, rights and responsibilities of citizens and issues to the public.”
What is an issue?
“An issue is something that affects a large group of people. It usually involves conflicting opinions. “
What is a right?
“A right is an entitlement, that comes from someone who has the authority to give it. Usually, it cannot be taken away.”
What is a freedom?
“A freedom is a political right to act without interference.”
What is a responsibility?
“A responsibility is something which must be performed as an obligation or duty. Responsibilities are necessary for rights to exist.”
What is a government?
“A government is a decision making system that has the power to make laws, direct the affairs of a country, province or municipality.”
What is a citizen?
“A citizen is an inhabitant of a city, province, country.”
What is an informed citizen?
“An informed citizen is aware of local, national, and global interests.”
What is a purposeful citizen?
“A purposeful citizen is aware of his / her role and impact in the community.”
What is an active citizen?
“An active citizen participates in the community, tries to influence the government in a positive manner, and has a vision of a better future.”
What is citizenship?
“Citizenship are duties, rights, privileges of a citizen; also refers to a person’s recognized legal status in a country.”
What is a society?
“A society is a group of people who have created cultural, political and economic institutions.”
Why study civics?
- To study how to government works.
- TO identify personal beliefs and values
- TO examine the challenges of participating in communities where people have different views.
- To practice citizenship skills.
- TO think critically about what citizenship is.
