What is Chemistry Flashcards
Fill in the blanks
Matter is anything that takes up β!! All matter consists of tiny β, which are constantly β.

What do you notice happens Potassium Mangate VII (purple crystals) as more water is added and what is the explanation?
Notice: The more water added the paler the solution becomes.
Explain: The coloured particles are being diluted more and more.
Solid
How are the particles arranged?
Can they move?
Do the particles attract eachother?
Arranged: In neat rows, touching, tightly packed
Move: No, just vibrate
Attract: Yes, strongly.
Liquids
How are the particles arranged?
Can they move?
Do the particles attract eachother?
Arranged: Randomly, touching
Move: Yes, move freely
Attract: Yes
Gas
How are the particles arranged?
Can they move?
Do the particles attract eachother?
Arranged: Randomly, rarely touch, spread out
Move: Yes
Attract: Very weakly
What are the 3 states of matter?
Solid
Liquid
Gas
What are the main changes of state of matter?
Melting/Freezing
Evaporating/Boiling
Condensing
Solid
Shape and volume
Fixed shape
Fixed volume
Liquid
Shape and volume
Change shape and take shape of container
Fixed volume
Gas
Shape and volume
No fixed shape - can spread out in all directions and fill any container
No fixed volume
What is matter/Material in Chemistry?
Any substance that can be identifed and classified.
What are some points to remember for a bar chart
Use a ruler and pencil
Labelled axis including units
Appropriate even scale
Bars of even width
Bars of different colours
What is a pure element/compound?
A pure element or compound contain only one substance
Give some examples of pure elements
Oxygen, Carbon, Sulphur
Give some examples of pure compounds
Distilled water, Carbon dioxide
Give examples of impure mixtures
Air, tap water, steel
What is a solute?
A solid that dissolves in a solvent
What is a solvent?
A liquid that dissolves a solid.
What is a solution?
A mixture of a solute dissolved in a solvent
What is the solute, solvent and solution when dissolving salt in water?
Solute: Salt
Solvent: Water
Solution: Salt water
Describe what happens when a solute dissolves?
When the solute is added to the solvent the particles begin to mix and spread out in the solvent.
Eventually when the solute particles fully spread out and mix in teh solvent a solution is formed.
What is filtration?
Separating an insoluble solid from a liquid.
What is evaporation used for?
To separate a soluble solid from a solution
Fill in the blanks
Salt is β in water
Water is the β, salt is the β
The salt and water together make up the β
Salt and water can be separated by β
Sand is β in water
When sand is stirred in water a β is formed.
Sand and water can be separated by β
Sand is the β and water is the β

What is a solution said to be if no more salt will dissolve?
Saturated
What are the 6 things to remember for a line graph
Label x-axis
Label y-axis
Good scale
Accurate points
Line of best fit - use ruler
