Q
What is an ovariohysterectomy
A
This is the removal of the ovaries and the uterus level to the cervix. This is a common procedure performed at the veterinary clinic. There is much debate about when this procedure is best performed. Some surgeons suggest before the bitches first heat, to reduce the chances of the patient developing mammary tumours, whilst others suggest after the first heat to allow a patient’s reproductive system to develop further and it is suggested that waiting for a first heat reduces the chances of urinary incontinence. All information must be provided to owners and the clinic’s protocols for desexing must be followed.
