Canine Castration Flashcards
Patient Prep - clip
The fur is clipped from the prepuce to just below the scrotum. The scrotum is also clipped, but care must be taken when clipping this area as the scrotum skin is delicate and sensitive and susceptible to clipper burns or tears
Some surgeons may prefer the testicles to not be clipped at all, therefore, always check with the surgeon before undertaking the clipping. The clipped region should extend laterally into the left and right inguinal section. Loose fur is removed with a vacuum, and lint rolled to remove the finer hairs. The skin is then prepared aseptically.
patient Positioning
The patient is placed in dorsal recumbency with the forelimbs secured cranially to the table. Often deep chested dogs will tilt to one side, and therefore may require sandbags placed at either side of the chest to aid in keeping the patient straight. Otherwise the forelimbs can be crossed and tied to the table accordingly. The hind limbs are frogged slightly and pulled caudally and tied to the table with positioning aids.
Instrument / Materials
A general surgical kit is required and a fenestrated drape that reflects the size of the patient.
