What is a mineral? Metal Ores Flashcards
What do geologist have to decide if a material is a mineral?
Geologists have a 5-Point test to decide if a material is a mineral. It must:
be made naturally
be inorganic
be solid
have a chemical formula
be made up of particles
How can a mineral be made?
A mineral must be made naturally usually through geological processes, such as volcanic action, heat or pressure.
What is inorganic?
Not from a living thing.
What are particles?
Atoms and Molecules
How are particles in a mineral organised?
They are organized in a pattern, usually crystals.
What are two types of Minerals?
Metallic and Non-Metallic
What is a sixth property all Minerals share?
Non-Renewable
What do minerals being Non-Renewable mean for us?
It means that eventually we could use them all up as they took millions of years to form.
What state are most metals found in?
Most metals found in ores that are made up of minerals.
How are metal ores taken from the ground?
Mainly by mininig or sometimes quarrying.
Name some of the most common metal ores.
Haematite
Cinnabar
Zincite
Cassiterite
Ilmenite
Iron ore is metal ore for which mineral?
Haematite
Cinnabar is metal ore for which mineral?
Mercury
Zincite is metal ore for which mineral?
Zinc
Ilmenite is metal ore for which mineral?
Titanium
What metals make up ores?
Metals with impurities in nature.
Where are these metal ores found?
They are found in Earths crust all over the world.
What deposits do Pakistan have?
Pakistan has enormous deposits of many different minerals and natural resources under the ground. These include metallic and non-metallic minerals, oil, natural gas, and gemstones.
Define Non-Renewable.
Non-renewable resources are those that cannot be replenished within a human lifetime or at a rate comparable to their consumption. These resources are finite and once depleted, they cannot be naturally regenerated.
What is a Rock? What is its relation to minerals?
A rock is a natural solid composed of one or more minerals.
Minerals are the building blocks of rocks.
Define Quarrying.
Quarrying is the process of extracting rock, sand, gravel, or other minerals from the ground.
What is Mining? What is the difference between Quarrying and Mining?
Mining is the process of extracting valuable minerals or other geological materials from the Earth’s surface or beneath it.
Mining involves deep excavation for valuable minerals.
Quarrying operates at or near the surface to extract construction materials.
What is an ore?
An ore is a natural deposit in Earth’s crust that contains one or more valuable minerals.
Metals with impurities in nature make up ores.
