What is a mineral? Metal Ores Flashcards
What do geologist have to decide if a material is a mineral?
Geologists have a 5-Point test to decide if a material is a mineral. It must:
be made naturally
be inorganic
be solid
have a chemical formula
be made up of particles
How can a mineral be made?
A mineral must be made naturally usually through geological processes, such as volcanic action, heat or pressure.
What is inorganic?
Not from a living thing.
What are particles?
Atoms and Molecules
How are particles in a mineral organised?
They are organized in a pattern, usually crystals.
What are two types of Minerals?
Metallic and Non-Metallic
What is a sixth property all Minerals share?
Non-Renewable
What do minerals being Non-Renewable mean for us?
It means that eventually we could use them all up as they took millions of years to form.
What state are most metals found in?
Most metals found in ores that are made up of minerals.
How are metal ores taken from the ground?
Mainly by mininig or sometimes quarrying.
Name some of the most common metal ores.
Haematite
Cinnabar
Zincite
Cassiterite
Ilmenite
