What do sociologists think regarding globalisation and migration/ migrant identities? Flashcards
Vertovec
describes something called ‘super-diversity’ which has developed from globalisation since the 1990s
Cohen
distinguishes three types of migrant:
- citizens
- denizens
- helots
Ehrenreich and Hochschild (regarding the feminization of migration)
care work, domestic work, and sex work in western countries is increasingly performed by women from poor countries
Shutes (regarding the feminization of migration)
40% of adult care nurses in the UK are migrants (mostly female)
Eade (regarding migrant identities)
second generation Bangladeshi Muslims in Britain created hierarchical identities ie. they saw themselves as Muslim then Bengali then British
Eriksen (the first is regarding migrant identities, the second about multiculturalism)
- globalisation has created more diverse migration patterns with back-and-forth movements of people through networks rather than permanent settlement
- distinguishes between shallow diversity and deep diversity
Castells (regarding multiculturalism)
assimilationist policies are counterproductive because they mark out minority groups as culturally backwards
Castles and Kosack (regarding multiculturalism)
assimilation policies may also encourage racist scapegoating where people blame migrants for social problems, they believe this benefits capitalism by creating a racially divided working class
