what are the disadvantages people bring to nature? Flashcards

1
Q

causing soil erosion and damaging vegetation ( elaborate how they affect nature )

A

when people hike along non-designated trails in nature areas:
- they may cause soil compaction which prevent rainwater from infiltrating the surface. this leads to higher surface flows and soil erosion as the flowing water washes away the soil particles
- people may trample on the vegetation, damaging plants and affecting their growth.

Q

example of soil erosion (from tb)

A

in 2014, human activities led to severe soil erosion and habitat degradation in Bukit Timah Nature Reserve. This resulted in the limiting of public access to the nature reserve for 2 years.

Q

worsening pollution and disturbing wildlife (elaborate how they negatively affect nature)

A
  • littering can worsen pollution in natural areas
  • animals can get cut by metal cans or become entangled with plastic containers and bags
  • some genius animals may consume litter because they need specs to see that its trash. this causes harm to them and then they basically suffer and maybe even die ☹
  • feeding wild animals may lead to changes in the habits and behaviours of wildlife, and human-wildlife conflicts can increase when animals associate food with people (greedy greedy ah noti tsktsk)
