What are fungi?
Fungi (singular: fungus) are a large group of living things with a wide range of habitats.
Give examples of some common fungi.
- mushroom
- bracket fungi (PSLE Book, Page 39 for picture)
- puff balls
- mould
Are fungi considered to be plants?
No.
Why are fungi not considered to be plants?
Because:
- They do not have roots and leaves
- They do not contain chlorophyll, so they cannot make their own food.
Can fungi make their own food?
No, because they do not contain chlorophyll.
How do fungi feed?
By absorbing nutrients from the organic matter they grow on, such as dead plants and animals.
Where do fungi grow on?
Organic matter such as dead plants and animals.
How do fungi reproduce?
Through very tiny spores so they are easily carried by wind when they are released.
Where are the spores found in for some fungi like mould?
In spore cases.
Where are the spores found for other fungi?
For other fungi, spores are found in sacs. For fungi like mushrooms, spores are found in the gills.
What is the structure of a mushroom like?
cap, gills, stalk (Page 39, PSLE textbook)
Do fungi come in various sizes?
Yes. Some are large and can be observed with our naked eyes, such as mushrooms and bracket fungi.
Some are micro-organisms, such as moulds and yeasts.
What are moulds?
Multi-cellular micro-organisms.
What are yeasts?
Uni-cellular micro-organisms.
