Wetlands Flashcards
Wetlands must have the following three attributes:
1) at least periodically, the land supports predominantly hydrophytes.
2) the substrate is predominantly hydrocarbon soil.
3) the substrate is saturated with water or covered by shallow water at some time during the growing season of each year.
Two general approaches for wetland classification:
Geographically based systems (broad based mapping similar to usda soil maps)
Site inventory environmental characteristics as found on the ground (watershed position, existing habitats, vegetation based approach)
Wetland classification based on a sites geomorphic setting (topographical shape), dominant water source, and dominant hydrodynamics. It has since been further developed as a system for assessing wetland functions. (Used by army corps of engineers
Hydrogeomorphic classification (HGM)
Name for artesenal wells, seeps, other places where ground water discharges to the surface but does not accumulate
Slip
Based on vegetation associations, this habitat based classification system has become the federal standard for habitat-based classification.

Indication of past history of landslides
Colluvial soils
