- causes swimmers ear
- leading cause of hospital aquired pneumonia
- OX positive
- blue/green colonies ( need specific conditions)
- fruity odor
- ID with comerical systems
- non lac. ferm
Stenotrphomonas Maltophillia
- found in hospitals and on equipment
- GNR
- NFL
- ox neg
- purple/yellow/green conditions
- smells like ammonia
- ID with comerical equipment
- use bactrum, sxt, or trimethalsulfa
Actinobacter
- hospital infections
- GNR but looks cocci
- ox neg
- easy to id
- resistant to many bacteria
burkholdaria cepaciae
plant pathogen, found in hospitals
- very important pathogen in CF patients
- ox pos
- OF glucose pos
- ons on OFBL medium
Pasteurella
- found in cats and dogs
- humans infected by bites
- can affect immune compromised
- GNR that grows well on BAP/CHOC but not mac
- requires CO2
- OX/indole positive
- responds well to penicillin
Hemophilus Influenzae
GNCB
- encapsulated strains can be life theatening( meningitis, epiglottitis, celluitis, …)
- non encapsulated more localized infections, ottis media, sinusitis
- test susceptibility to Beta lactams, ampicillin
- only grows on blood with staph.
- X and V factors
- needs CO2
- ox positive
legionella
water bug in hospitals, hotels, ….
- cause on legionares disease
- faint staining long thin rods
- strict anaerobes
- grows on chocolate
- BYCE to culture
Neisseria gonorrhoeae
GN DC
- never normal flora
- ox pos
- cat pos
- sensitive to drying /cold
- only grows on choc and mtm
- ferments glucose
- pen resistnace
Neisseria meningitidis
normal inhabitant of upper respiratory tract - leading cause of meningitis - spread by aerosolization - Cat positive - grows on BAP/CHOC/ MTM - ferments glucose and maltose -
Moraxella catarrahlis
normal inhabitiant of upper resp. tract
- GNDC
- OX pos
- CAT pos
- will grow on Blood and choc
- dnase positive
- producees burate esterade
- determine ampicillin sensi
Listeria monocytogenes
- only GPR of medical importance
- causes bacteremia and meningitis
- can be passed from mother to fetus
- GPR -small
- grows well on BAP and CHOC
- looks lihe group B strep on B plate
- CAT POS
