Wet lab Flashcards
1
Q
Bacteroides fragilis
A
GN pleomorphic rods that stain pale
- grows in 20% bile
- grows on KV
- resistant to K,V,C
- cat pos
- indole neg
- tan raised colonies
- issues below the diaphram
2
Q
Prevotella
A
Gram neg coccobacilli
- susceptible to colistin
- black brown pigment on KV
- Cat neg
- indole neg
- brick red flouresence
- head, pulmonary and neck injuries
3
Q
Porphyromas
A
head, neck ,pulmonary infections
- Gram neg coccobacilli
- sensitive to Van. so does not grow on KV
- black brown pigment on brucella
- cat and indole neg
4
Q
fusobacterium
A
pulmonary brain, oral infections
- Colistin and kanamycin susceptible
- long slender GNRs with tapered ends
- does not grow on KV
- bad odor and green breadcrumb like colonies on Brucella, VERY SENSITIVE TO OXYGEN
- Cat neg
- indole positive
5
Q
Clostridium perfringens
A
gas- gangrene
- powerful enterotoxin and food posioning
- large box car GPRs variable spores
- can appear GN
- double zone hemolysis
- reverse camp positive ( pac man )
- spore formers`
6
Q
Vibrio
A
gram neg curved rods
- likes brackish/salt water
- can get by eating undercooked seafood or ingesting water
- OX positve
- indole positive
- beta hemolytic
- grow on TCBS media- has lots of salt
- use alkaline peptone water to enhance growth
- produces enterotoxin that produces rice water dirrahea
- FERMENTS GLUCOSE
7
Q
Aeromonas
A
brackish/ low salt water
- hydrophillia
- ferments glucose
- ox pos
- indole pos
- beta hemolytic
- can diff. from vibrio because it will not grow on TCBS
8
Q
Camplobacter
A
- found in animals-poultry
- common cause of dirrahea
- grows on campy plate at 42C in microphillic conditions
- gull wing GNR
- grey/pinkish/yellow mucoid colonies
- cat positive
- hiperhydratre pos
- Jejubi is susceptible to nalidixic
- fetus is susceptible to ceph
9
Q
pseudomonas aeruginosa
A
commonly isolted NF-GNR
- found in water, shower heads, …
- common cause of nosocomial infections
- is a very significant pathogen in burn and CF pts
- causes swimmers ear
- leading cause of hospital aquired pneumonia
- OX positive
- blue/green colonies ( need specific conditions)
- fruity odor
- ID with comerical systems
- non lac. ferm
10
Q
Stenotrphomonas Maltophillia
A
- found in hospitals and on equipment
- GNR
- NFL
- ox neg
- purple/yellow/green conditions
- smells like ammonia
- ID with comerical equipment
- use bactrum, sxt, or trimethalsulfa
11
Q
Actinobacter
A
- hospital infections
- GNR but looks cocci
- ox neg
- easy to id
- resistant to many bacteria
12
Q
burkholdaria cepaciae
A
plant pathogen, found in hospitals
- very important pathogen in CF patients
- ox pos
- OF glucose pos
- ons on OFBL medium
13
Q
Pasteurella
A
- found in cats and dogs
- humans infected by bites
- can affect immune compromised
- GNR that grows well on BAP/CHOC but not mac
- requires CO2
- OX/indole positive
- responds well to penicillin
14
Q
Hemophilus Influenzae
A
GNCB
- encapsulated strains can be life theatening( meningitis, epiglottitis, celluitis, …)
- non encapsulated more localized infections, ottis media, sinusitis
- test susceptibility to Beta lactams, ampicillin
- only grows on blood with staph.
- X and V factors
- needs CO2
- ox positive
15
Q
legionella
A
water bug in hospitals, hotels, ….
- cause on legionares disease
- faint staining long thin rods
- strict anaerobes
- grows on chocolate
- BYCE to culture
