Anaerobic bacteria Flashcards
Obligate aerobic bacteria
need oxygen
- grow at the top of the tube
obligate anaerobe
avoids oxygen
- grows at the bottom of the tube
facultative bacteria
can grow in either but will chose oxygen because it is more energy effective
microphiles
needs oxygen but at low concentrations
aerotolerant
oxygen does not affect them grows through out the tube
it is unacceptable to use anaerobic culture for
superficial wounds, vaginal/urethral swabs, respiratory specimens, stool, urine( except subpubic aspirate)
do not use swabs because
swabs are sub optimal because drying swabs adhere to the swab and are subject to contamination
KV agar
contains Kanamycin, vancomycin, laked blood
- for bacteroides and provetella
brucella
all anaerobes
- sheep blood, vit K, hemin
- enriched medium
PRAS
anaerobic condition system that is made of sterilized tubes that you innoculate with a syringe
- total anaerobic system
- EXPENSIVE
BD bio bag
disposable chamber
- potassium borohydride and sodium bicarbonate combined with a palladium catalyst
- resazurin indicator
- expensive and takes up room
Jars
gas pouch
- add water to combine with sodium borohydrate
- catalyst
- anaeropack system
- no water needed just add the pack
- disadvantage, takes up a lot of space and cant add plates after activator is in
Anoxomat
hooks up to a computer that allows you to add plates whenever needed and the system will bring back to the right conditions
Glove box
completely anaeronic conditions
Bacteroides
- isolate of the intrabdominal tract, respiratory tract, gential tract, brain, skin, soft tissue infections
- resistant to many antibiotics( resistant to Penicillin)
- KV agar- tan/red round colonies
- GRAM NEGATIVE COCCOBACILLI/RODS
- catalase positive
- indole negative
- bile sensitive
