Jacksonian Democracy
the idea that common people should control the governemnt
Kicthen Cabinet
-met in White House kicthen and consisited of trusted friends and polictical supporters of Andrew Jackson
Spoils System
the practice of rewarding polictical supporters with governemnt jobs
-rotating people in office was more democratic because it gave people a chance to serve their government
-Jackson replaced the Republicans with Democrats
Tariff Acts of 1828 and 1832
North favored these Tariffs because it forced Americans to buy products made in the North; South was against it because they felt the laws were unconstitutional, feared other countries would not buy their cotton; and it raised the price on goods from factories
Nullification Crisis
-was caused by higher taxes on imports
-thought that it would encourage the growth of manufacturing in the United States
-when Jackson signed a new law that lowered taxes, South Carolina still thought they were too high so they attemped to nullify both the 1828 and 1832 acts of tarrifs
-John C. Calhoun was also against Jackson in these hardships
Indian Removal Act of 1830
-passed by congress in 1830 and allowed the president to make treaties with American Indians to the east their land for land Great Plains of the Mississippi River
- lead to trail of tears
What was the Bank of United States? How did Jackson view it?
-The Bank of the US held mostly federal money of the country
-Jackson called the bank an unconsitutional monopoly and belived it mainly exsisted to make the rich more wealthy
-thought it was a menace to everyday people and state banks
-Jackson thought getting rid of the bank would be victory for economic democracy
Manifest Destiny
-means obvious fate
-took many forms expanding the US including treaties, settlements, and war

-Jefferson sent James Monroe to France to but New Orleans for $7.5 million
US thoughts on Annexation of Texas
-Southerners were eager to add another slave state
-Northerners who opposed slavery wanted to keep Texas out.
-Others feared that annexation would lead to war with Mexico.
-In 1845, Congress voted to annex Texas and it was admitted as the 28 state

Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo
-signed in 1848
-the treaty to agree on ending the war over land in between territories of US+ mexico
Gadsden Purchase
-1853 James Gadsden bought a small strip of land south of the Mexican Cession
This became the present-day border of the southwestern United States with Mexico.
-cost 10 million

-because they were met with military forces
-In 1831 the Supreme Court held that American Indians had a right to keep their lands and did not have to move west yet still stuck stubborn

U.S. and France signed a treaty giving Louisiana to the United States in exchange for $15 million
Conflicts of purchasing Louisiana Territory
-Some people worried that such a large country would be impossible to govern.
-Some were upset with the $15 million price tag
-Some felt it was unconsituitional because the Constitution did not say anything about purchasing foreign territory.
