What does Manifest Destiny mean?
The belief of America taking over the entire continent
Why did Americans want to expand to the Pacific Ocean?
They believed that they should spread freedom by setting the whole country all the way to the Pacific Ocean
What impact did Westward Expansion have on Native Americans?
They had gotten pushed out of their land. The lands that they had existed for centuries.
How did the majority of Americans move West?
They used the Oregon Trail
How did the Adams-Onis Treaty help further Westward Expansion?
The Oregon Treaty in 1846 and the land was split at the forty ninth parallel, latitude.
Who are the “mountain men” and why were they living on thee frontier?
The mountain men were people who would trap beavers for their skin.
What was the result of the Oregon Treaty?
Spain gives up all claims to Oregon and set the limits if their territory at what is now California northern.
Why did Americans move into Mexico, specifically the area of Texas?
To farm and develop land
What happened at the Alamo? What impact did it have?
There was a battle between Mexico and Texas, Mexico won and all Texans were killed. After that, “Remember the Alamo” had been made to remember those who died.
What is the Lone Star Republic?
The Lone Star Republic is Texas and this was because America did not want Texas as a state.
What does it mean to annex something?
To add a territory to another territory
Why did the United States fight a war with Mexico?
This was because of border dispute.
What was the result of the Mexican American War?
Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo was signed and had ended the war.
What does it mean to cede?
To transfer control of something
Why did the population in California grow and diversity?
Gold was discovered and people rushed there so they could become rich, 49ers were created.
What does it mean to be a 49er?
Prospectors who came to California in 1849 in search of gold.
What hardships did miners face in California?
Harsh weather, discrimination, and lacking for success
Were prospectors successful in mining for gold? Why or why not?
Not good, gold wasn’t found and if it was, not large amounts.
What are boomtowns and ghost towns?
Boomtowns were towns that grew quick, ghost towns were abandoned.
What was Congress’ biggest concern regarding adding states to the country in the 1800s?
Slavery, states wanted to enter as free states and that would affect Congress.
