Not many people lived in Oregon (except Native Americans, who were not really considered in any of the decisions), but Great Britain and the US had four trading companies posted there. After the trek via the Oregon Trail began, many more people lived in Oregon Country, Great Britain claimed Oregon as theirs, but so did the US. They almost started a war over it, but instead compromised and SPLIT the territory in half.

Q

After gold was found in California, many people moved out west, hoping to strike it rich. These people were often “FORTY-NINERS” since the rush west was in 1849. Many people became rich, but not often from finding gold. Sellers of picks and other mining equipment and goods were able to charge a lot of money and become wealthy from the forty-niners money.
