Welter 2011 (Context) Flashcards
Why is context important in entrepreneurship?
- Entrepreneurial activities are influenced by the environment where the actions take place
- There is a tendency to underestimate the influence of external factors
- Context provides individuals with both assets and liabilities for their actions
- Important for understanding when, how and why, entrepreneurship happens and who becomes involved
Name the three levels of context and what they include
Micro: individuals, genders, family, feelings, organisations, teams
Meso: Inter organisational clusters, networks, markets
Macro: National, economy, society, country
Name and describe the four dimensions of context
Business (industiry, market) - Stage of life-cycles of industries and markets, number and nature of competitors
Social (Networks; household and family) - Structure of networks, density, frequency of network relations: composition and roles of household/family
Spatial (Geographical environments eg. countries, communities and neighborhoods) - Characteristics of physical business location, infrastructure, local communities and regions.
Institutional (Culture and society: political and economic system) - Societal attitudes and norms: legal and regulatory regulations: policy and support measures
How do you contextualize?
1) Entrepreneurship theory needs to be contextualized. Paying attention to situatinal boundaries in order to frame research questions.
2) Theorizing context = Identifying theories in context. Researchers should challenge their preferred research paradigms, which assume one way relationshop between context and entrepreneurship
How does (1) context influence (2) the instrumental evaluation and (3) the legitimating evaluation of opportunities? Any example?
How does multiplicity of context influence the evaluation of entrepreneurial opportunity?
How does context act as an 1) asset and 2) liability to resource utilization and acquisition when adopting the logics of 3) resource explotiation and 4) resource exploration? Discuss
