Wellbeing
The ability of people to access the things they need to live happy, healthy and contented lives. Requirements include fresh water, secure food supply, shelter, clothing and safety. Secondary needs include a decent living, good health and access to education.
Wealth
Generated by producing and selling things, earning wages from work, making investments or owning assets.
Health
Community ability to treat and control diseases, provide health care, care for the vulnerable and provide emergency services. Vital needs include clean air, clean water and a secure nutritious food supply
Education
- Reading and writing leads to access to greater numbers of services and provides a range of job options, higher wages, and improved living standards
- Poverty and conflict are 2 major reasons that kids do not go to school
- In sub-Saharan Africa, there was a 54% entertainment rate in 1990 to a 98% in 2020
Contrasts in Wealth
A country’s wealth is measured through GDP, which is divided by size of population to produce ‘GDP per capita’
Contrasts in Health
Indicators of health to measure and compare health are: life expectancy, numbers of doctors per 1000 people, infant mortality rate, access to reliable water
Contrasts in Education
Education provides opportunities to: have a range of skills/tools, participate in workforce/improve a country’s economy, live healthier lives, combat poverty, reduce inequalities in wellbeing
The UN
Founded in 1945 to increase political and economic cooperation among its member countries to promote peace and prevent future outbreaks of armed conflicts around the world. It has 193 member countries.
HDI
A summary composite measure of a country’s average achievements in three basic aspects of human development: health, knowledge and standard of living.
