Welding Safety 110103e Flashcards
Damage to human body with minor burns (first degree burns)?
With surface or minor burns (first degree burns), only the outer layers of skin are damaged.
Damage to human body with major burns (second or third degree burns)?
Major burns (second or third degree burns) are deep burns with all layers of the skin destroyed and underlying fat and muscle damaged to varying depths.
At what distance are light rays dangerous when welding?
Light rays are dangerous for a distance of up to 50 ft (15 m) even when reflected.
What is visible light rays?
Visible light rays are those that you can see.
What is Ultraviolet rays rays?
Ultraviolet rays rays are invisible. They cause burns to exposed skin and blistering of the eyeballs and is more common with electric arc welding.
What is Arc flash?
Arc flash (sometimes called welding flash or arc eye) is the term commonly used to describe eyes burned by ultraviolet rays.
How much stronger is the ultraviolet ray intensity of the electric arc compared to the sun?
The ultraviolet ray intensity of the electric arc is said ti be ten times that of the sun.
What effects can infrared heat rays have on exposed skin?
Infrared heat rays are also invisible.
They penetrate deeply and can cause temperature increases and burns to exposed skin.
What are the dangers of gases created during welding?
Gases created during welding, such as ozone, carbon monoxide or nitrogen dioxide are extremely toxic (poisonous). In high enough concentrations, these gases can be fatal. Some harmful gases cause cancer and are called carcinogens.
What are the symptoms of metal fumes fever?
Metal fumes fever (sometimes known as zinc chills) produces flu-like symptoms from inhaling fumes of certain metal oxides.
What can happen if you inhale concentrated amounts of Argon, Helium, or Carbon Dioxide during welding?
When you use Argon, Helium, Carbon Dioxide during welding processes (GMAW, GTAW) inhaling concentrated amounts can lead to suffocation.
When should hearing protection be worn according to sound level regulations?
The maximum permitted sound level for an eight-hour day is 85 dBA and hearing protection should be worn if the sound level is above 85 dBA.
What is the operating pressure range of compressed air systems?
Compressed air systems can operate between 100 psi to 150 psi
What is the pressure to which acetylene and propane cylinders are filled?
Acetylene and propane cylinders are filled to 250 psi
What pressure do carbon dioxide cylinders contain?
Carbon dioxide cylinders contain 1200 psi
What is the pressure range for oxygen, argon, nitrogen, and helium cylinders?
Oxygen, argon, nitrogen and helium are filled to 2200 psi to 2500 psi.

What are the standard and half-size oxygen cylinder volumes?
Standard cylinder 6.9 mqube
Half size 3.45 mqube
What type of thread do all oxygen connections have?
All oxygen connections have a right-hand thread
What happens at the critical point of acetylene?
The critical point of acetylene is 193 kPa (28 psi) pressure at 21 C (70 F). At this point, acetylene breaks down, releasing heat and this usually results in spontaneous ignition if air is present.
What is the maximum safe working pressure (MSWP) of acetylene gas?
De-stabilized acetylene is not safe when compressed beyond 103 kPa (15 psi), especially in larger volumes, such as cylinders, pipelines, generators. Therefore, the maximum safe working pressure (MSWP) of acetylene gas is 103 kPa (15 psi)
What is the most dangerous type of light ray emitted by welding?
The most dangerous type of light ray emitted by welding is infrared ray.
