Q

What is the function of the flux used in soldering?

A

Flux covers the cleaned and heated metal to keep oxygen away from it so oxides cannot form. Oxides keep the solder from adhering to the surface of the metal.

A

Weak welds.

16
Q

What type of welding causes less buckling and warping than gas?

A

Metallic arc welding.

17
Q

Define gas shielded arc welding.

A

(SMAW) Shielded metal arc welding, informally AKA stick welding, is a manual arc welding process that uses a consumable electrode coated in flux to lay the weld. An electric current, in the form of either alternating current or direct current from a welding power supply, is used to form an electric arc between the electrode and the metals to be joined. As the weld is laid, the flux coating of the electrode disintegrates, giving off vapors that serve as a shielding gas and providing a layer of slag, both of which protect the weld area from atmospheric contamination.

18
Q

Advantages of gas shielded arc welding?

A

Stronger, more ductile, and corrosion resistant.

19
Q

When welding, size of torch tip determines;

A

Amount of heat delivered, not temperature.

20
Q

Oxyacetylene rigs;
flame for Aluminum?
flame for Stainless Steel?

A
Alum = Soft and neutral
Stainless = Slightly carburizing
