Welcome to Plant Earth Flashcards
mantle
the layer of the earth between the crust and the core
asthenosphere
the part of the mantle that lies just below the lithosphere
crust
the solid surface of the earth
Pangaea
a supercontinent theorized to exist during the Paleozoic and Mesozoic Eras when the continents were joined together
tectonic plates
large pieces of the lithosphere that move slowly over the mantle of the Earth
plate boundaries
the edge of the tectonic plates
convergent boundary
a plate boundary where two plates are moving towards each other
divergent boundary
a plate boundary at which plates are moving away from each other; causes an upwelling of magma from the mantle to cool and form new crust
transform fault boundary
a plate boundary at which two plates slide against each other in opposite directions
subduction
the result of a converging ocean-ocean or ocean-continent boundary, in which a heavy ocean plate is pushed below the other plate and melts as it encounters the hot metal
active volcanoe
volcanoes that are currently erupting or have erupted within recorded history (that is, within the last 10,000 years)
dormant volcanoes
volcanoes that have not been known to erupt during the last 10,000 years
extinct volcanoe
volcanoes that are not though to ever erupt again
subduction zones
the site of a convergent boundary between oceanic and continental plates, or sometimes between two ocean plates, at which the subducting plate is recycled into new magma, which rises through the overlying plate to create volcanoes inland
Rift valleys
the areas of new crust formation at divergent boundaries, usually between two oceanic plates
