Weiners Attribution & Personality (2 separate components)) Flashcards
what is learned helplessness?
learned helplessness is the belief of inevitable failure and can be prevented by attributing success internally and failure externally.
what is mastery orientation?
the persistence to take on challenges even when faced with difficulty with the belief of success. This is linked with high levels of confidence meanwhile attributing success internally and failure to internal unstable factors.
what are the 4 factors in weiners model?
ability, task difficulty, effort, luck
explain weiners added dimension of controllability
for success, performers will take credit due to their effort which ultimately raises confidence, therefore increasing mastery orientation and decreasing learned helplessness. For failure, performers will blame it on their preparation or any other changeable reasons due to their efforts.
what is the definition of personality?
sum of an individuals characteristics which make them unique
name the 3 theories of personality
trait, social learning theory and interactionist
what is trait theory?
personality is determined by genetics so traits are stable and consistent in all generalisations therefore behaviour is predictable.
what is social learning theory?
personality is determined through imitating and copying other’s behaviours in the environment, therefore is predictable if the same situation reoccurs.
what is interactionist theory?
personality is determined through the relationship between social behaviour and inheritance, meaning that behaviour is unpredictable .
what are the two trait theories?
extrovert/introvert and stable/unstable by Eysenck, while the other is type A and type B said by Girdano’s Narrow Band Approach.
explain the introvert and extrovert theory
extroverts tend to be outgoing, suitable to team sports and low arousal
introverts tend to have an inward focus therefore suited to individual sport, they prefer isolation and become aroused quickly
explain the stable and unstable personality theory (eysenck)
stable personalities tend to have a predictable temperament, moods are likely to be consistent and have low anxiety.
unstable personalities tend to be unpredictable which is not ideal for sports participation, they are prone to worry and have an unrealistic perception of a situation.
explain 4 characteristics of type a and b
type a: highly aroused, aggressive, ambitious, prone to excessive anxiety
type b: low levels of arousal, passive, relaxed and cool under pressure
