Start of Weimar Republic
In January 1919 the council of representatives set up a new parliament
Friedich eibert was the first president
Phillip schnieidmann was the first chancellor
This period was called the Weimar Republic due to the new people elected to the reichstag meeting in weimar
Weimar rules for president
President is elected every 7 years
He choses the chancellor
He can dissolve the reichstag and call new elections
Proportional representation occurred in Germany’s parliament
The weaknesses of Weimar Republic
Proportional representation meant that lots of small parties got into the reichstag but didn’t get a big say
The president had to get involved when there was a disagreement so it undermined the point of the democracy
TOV affect of Weimar
The government was forced to sign the TOTV which meant that they had to pay 6.6 billion pounds in reparations. Also the army was reduced. This cause outraged in Germany due to the people believing that they shouldn’t have to pay that much and that the government shouldn’t have signed it. They were called the November criminals
Years of unrest in Weimar Germany
In 1919 thousands of Germans were poor
Germans blamed losing the war on the November criminals
In January 1919,communists led by liebknecht and Luxembourg tried to take over Berlin
They managed to take over big building and 50,000 workers went on strike

In 1922 former freikorps members asassinated Rataneu who was a foreign minister and Jewish, anti Jewish increased
Recovery of Weimar Republic
Stressman took over as chancellor in 1923, he helped recover the German economy
In September 1923 he ended the strike of the ruhr reducing tension between France Belgium and Germany
He also introduced a group of pro democracy socialist who made parliament make decisions quicker

Living standards improved for the working class In 1927 he introduced unemployment insurance which meant that if they paid in a bit of money’ if they became unemployed they would still have some money left More than 2 million new jobs providing extra employment
