A

Social Democreats were leading the REICHSTAG
Ebert sent an ultimatum to Kaiser telling him to abdicate or the Social democrats would join the revolution.

General strike in Berlin - armed workers and soldiers roamed the streets

Ebert feared an extremist takeover nad announced the Kaiser’s abdication and declared himself chancellor

A

Ger workers were bitter at the restricitions which were put on their earnings - FACTORY OWNERS WERE RICH

Bavaria led by Kurt Eisner (Ebert’s ally) ws declared a Soviet Republic by the Communists and Eisner was murdered

A

Yes, they were happy to avoid a bloody civil war like in Russia

BUT

Communism remained a powerful anti-gov force throughout the 1920s and Ebert put his gov in the hands of the army and Freikorps who were not v.loyal

Why were the Ger’s optimistic for the TOV?

A

The kaiser was gone - they could not punish the new gov for his mistakes!

The new republic needed support if it was to become stable

Wilson also wanted a fair and just treaty to avoid another war.

Ger was not the only nation that was to blame for starting the war.

A

preferred the Kaiser’s militaristic, dictatorial style of gov that brought Ger prosperity and prowess and a military leader in Europe

Freikorps resented the restrictions of the military in the TOV and blamed Ebert for agreeing

A

Dr Wolfgang Kapp and 5000 Frei. marched into Ber.

Army refused to fire on them

Ger people declared a strike so there was no power/water

Kapp saw defeat and left

A

Yes - the Ger people backed him up which showed that his gov had support

BUT - many rebels went unpunished b/c the gov. didnt have the support of the army.

Fr and Belgium invaded the Ruhr and took raw materials and goods

They went on strike so there was nothing for the Fr to take

A

HYPERINFLATION

The halt in industrial production led to the collapse of the German currency. This made the gov. print more money but this became worthless.

A

Stresemann Chancellor in 1923 - called off the policy of passive resistance in the Ruhr as it was bankrupting Ger

New currency - Rentenmark

Right wing army support maintained by giving orders to depose left wing govs - this made it easier to get the army to fight right wing nationalists

A

Negotiated loans under the Dawes Plan 1924

Locarno Treaties 1925 - Ger then got into the League and was given a permanent position on the Council after 1926

Young Plan 1929 - reduced reparations

A

If it was trading with other countries this would mean it would have better relations - putting to bed animosity with Europe

A

A

ECONOMY - Dawes Plan allowed Ger industry to recover and 1928 same levels of productions as before the war

NAZIS LESS THAN 3% VOTE IN 1928 (12 seats)

A

All Gers had equal rights to vote

Fair representation of all parties

Strong president keep control of gov and protect the country in crisis

What the issues with the Weimar Constitution?

A

Proportional representation - too many political parties and unable to form an enduring majority in the R’stag that could form a stable gov

1919 Republic had enemies - why give equal rights to those who wanted to destroy it

Encouraged lots of small parties, coalitions

Article 48 - President could rule like dictator (make laws without consulting the R’stag)

What were the Issues with the Weimar gov Economy?

A

Economic boom precarious - Ger properity built on LOANS!

Big businesses controlled 1/2 Ger’s industrial production and big landowners prospered - value of land increased by 700%.

Workers in big industries benefitted - W.gov was sympathetic to unions so got better pay and conditions.

BUT PEASANTS AND MIDDLE CLASSES SUFFERED FROM OVERPRODUCTION AND NO DEMAND FOR FOOD

A

CULTURE - many wanted a return to simple country values
Wandervogel - wanted more help for country and less town decadence

POLITICS - Nazis and Comm increased support
(W gov was unstable as it relied on coalition govs)

4 diff Chancellors, 30% vote went to parties opposing the Republic
Hindenburg became President in 1926 - opposed democracy

FOREIGN POLICY - Nationalists attacked Stres. for Locarno signing and LoN join (acceptance of TOV)

Locarno was seen as a plot against communism in the USSR
