how did womens lives NOT change?

A
  • some political parties like the SPD still opposed equal pay for women.
  • only 1/3 of women were working in 1925 and this stayed roughly the same in 1931.
  • they were still expected to do a ‘double-shift’ where they would go to work and then come home and look after the children and do the housework.

how did women’s lives change?

A
  • 1920, over 100 women were elected into the reichstag
  • the ‘new woman’
  • more women filed for divorces, 1902-1905 there was only 21 per 1,000 and in 1921-1925 there were 62 per 1,000 marriages.
  • they campaigned for legal and free abortion and contraception and after 1927 it was made legal to advertise contraception.

  • Danes, Poles, assimilated Jews and black jazz musicians all had legal political rights.
  • they also gained language rights during the mid 1920’s

  • gypsies had to carry around ID cards with them and they also had travel bans put on them.
  • jewish people were being randomly attacked on the street.

A
  • teachers were required to have reached the abitur which are like a levels in order to teach in any school.
  • new creative teaching techniques were introduced and they used music and pictures, as well as trying to improve student - teacher relationships.
  • an inspection system was introduced into all schools.

  • very few working class had acess to education beyond the age of 14
  • it was still very divided religiously
  • the actual structure of schooling stayed the same
  • education was still from the ages of 6 to 14.

Jazz music was very popular and was brought over from the USA. The same wooding band toured berlin and hamburg in 1925

A

zlettheatre was developed and it was an experimental street theatre. Bertolt Brecht wrote extremely controversial plays and ‘ The Threepenny opera’ critiqued the capitalist world in 1928.

A

the Bauhaus school was deisgned and built by walter gropius and it used new techniques and materials like glass, reinforced concrete and steel to give a more modern loom. he said that he wanted to leave the German past behind and look forward to international future.

Erich Remarque’s ‘all quiet on the western front’ was an anti war novel and it was also a bestseller which meant people were willing to read these types of books.

Otto Dix and George Grosz used expressionistic styles and used a lot of geometry and shapes in their artwork.

‘metropolis’ by Fritz Land in 1927 was an expressionist science fiction film and this created a lot more jobs for the Germans and was the first introduction to the expressionist style.

The musical is set in the kit kat club and there was lots of shows and performances especially in berlin. it was the only place where you would see the working class and the middle class together with absolutely no divide at all.

A

the new woman were viewed as decadent because they showed more skin, along with the higher tolerance of cross dressing and homosexuality in society, the conservatives saw this as decadent and these things would mostly happen in the ‘el dorado nightclub’.
