Weight,Mass And Gravity Flashcards
What is Mass
Mass is just the amount of matter (stuff) in an object
What is Mass mearsured in
Its measured in kilograms (kg)
What is a centre of mass
The centre of mass is the point at which the object will balance
What is weight
Weight is the force acting on an object due to gravity
What is weight measured in
Weight is measured in Newtons (N)
Where does weight act upon
The force of weight acts upon the objects centre of mass
What does weight depend on
The weight of an object depends on its mass and the strength of the gravitational field it’s in
What equipment can weight be measured on
Weight can be measured with a calibrated spring balance or newtonmeter
How can you calculate weight
You can only calculate weight of an object if you know its mass (m) and the strength of the gravitational field that it is in (g)
Whats the equation for weight
Weight (N) = Mass (kg) x Gravitational Field Strength (N/kg)
Whats Gravitional Field for Earth
For Earth, g is around 9.8 N/kg
Are mass and weight Directly Proportional
Yes Mass and Wight are Directly Proportional
What is the Direct Proportionality symbol
W ∝ m
