Weight and Balance Flashcards
What is a consequence of being overweight?
The airframe might not be able to handle the loads of flight or even takeoff
What is included in the basic empty weight?
Airframe, unusable fuel, Engine, permanently installed equipment, full engine oil
What is added to the basic empty weight to calculate total weight?
People, fuel, baggage
How much does 100LL weigh?
6 lbs per gallon
What is the consequence of a CG that is too far forward?
Reduced elevator authority to rotate for takeoff, risk of hitting nosewheel first on landing
What is the consequence of a CG that is too far aft?
Reduced stability in pitch, beyond the aft limit its become instable in pitch and will go nose up until a stall and spin
What is the datum? On the 172?
A reference point for calculating CG, it’s the engine bulkhead on the 172
What is the arm?
The distance from the datum in measuring CG
What is moment? How is it calculated? What is the moment index?
Moment is the effect something causes on the CG / Moment = Arm x Weight / The moment/100 is the moment index
Why is it important to calculage CG from start of flight to burned fuel changes at end of flight?
The burning of fuel reduces the weight and moment and may cause the CG by the end of flight to be out of the limits
What is the “utility category” vs “normal category”?
More allowable maneuvers, especially spins and spin recovery… utility doesn’t allow rear passengers or baggage
What is the calculation for CG?
Total moment / Total Weight = CG
What is maximum ramp weight? Max landing weight? Zero fuel weight
Maximum weight before taxi and fuel burn / Max weight to land / Basic empty weight plus crew, passengers, and baggage
