Weight and Balance Flashcards
What is included in basic empty weight?
Airframe, engine, Equipment and accessories, Unusable fuel, full engine oil
What needs to be added to weight to ensure its within operating limit?
People, baggage, and fuel
How much does 100LL fuel weigh?
6 lbs per gallon
What happens if the CG is too far forward?
Reduced elevator control on takeoff and landing
What happens if the CG is too far aft?
Less stable in the pitch control, potential to stall or spin as nose pitches up
What is the Datum on the C172?
The front face of the fire wall, we measure distance from the Datum for balance calculations
What is the Arm?
The distance measured from the Datum for a certain weight
What is the moment? How is it calculated? What is the unit?
It is the effect of the given weight at a certain distance, Moment = Arm x Weight, inch-lbs
What is the moment index?
The moment divided by 100 or 1000, depending on the plane
How do you check if the CG is within limits?
Calculate the total moment index (pilot, passengers, cargo, basic empty weight) and see if it is within limits
Why do you have to check fuel burn for CG calculations?
Fuel burn will change the CG by the end of a flight and you need to make sure its still in normal CG range
What are the limitations of utility category flying?
No rear seat passengers or cargo allowed, within utility CG limits
What is the calculation for CG?
Total moment divided by total weight
