High Performance and Complex Airplanes Flashcards
What defines a high performance airplane?
Over 200 hp engine
What defines a complex airplane?
Retractable gear, adjustable prop pitch, flaps
When can you fly a high performance or complex airplane?
With proper ground and flight instructor from a certified instructor AND a logbook endorsement
What is a Technically Advanced Aircraft (TAA)?
It has a PFD, MFD, and two-axis autopilot
What does prop adjustment do?
Adjust the propellor pitch to match the rpm selected
What does manifold pressure measure?
The absolute pressure of the fuel-air mixture in the system
What happens to the RPM when prop pitch is adjusted?
Lower prop pitch (forward) means higher engine rpm
How to reduce power on a variable prop plane? Increase power?
Manifold pressure first down, then rpm down / increase rpm, then man pres
When should cowl flaps be opened?
During takeoff and climb, or during very hot weather, or when the checklist dictates it
What is vapor lock?
Heat boiling/vaporizing the fuel in the fuel lines above the engine, leading to a difficult start
What does a turbocharger do?
Compresses the intake air to allow the engine to create more power at higher altitudes
When should you retract the landing gear?
After there’s not enough runway left to safely land back on the ground in case of an emergency AND there’s a positive rate of climb
Where should you extend the landing gear?
Downwind, 3 nm on straight in, or entry into the base
What is the pnemonic G-U-M-P-S?
Gas on proper tank, Undercarriage down and locked, Mixture rick or set, Prop Full or set, Switches and Seatbelts as encessary
