What is the definition of form?
Form is the way a work of art looks
What is the definition of Content?
Content is what a work of art says (but not necessarily subject matter)
What is the definition of context?
Context is all of the issues that surround a work of art in a given place or time.
What is the definition of style?
Style is a product of form, content, and context. It is a particular manner, form, or character of representation, construction or expression typical of an individual artist or of a certain school, culture, region, or period.
What is Naturalism?
Naturalism is a style of depiction in which the physical appearance of the rendered image in nature is the primary inspiration.
What is Idealization?
Idealization is a process in art through which artists strive to make their forms and figures attain perfection based on pervading cultural values or of their own mental image of what the ideal is.
What is Realism?
Realism is the attempt to depict objects as they are in actual, visible reality.
What is Abstract?
Abstract is any art that does not represent observable aspects of nature os transforms visible forms into patterns resembling the original model “shorthand” image.
What is the definition of Stylization?
Stylization is a particular manner of representation that conforms to an intelectual or artistic idea rather than natural appearances.
What is a relief and what are the two different kinds?
A relief is a sculptural method in which the sculpted pieces remain attached to background. The two kinds are raised and sunk.
What is a pigment?
A pigment is a substance that gives paint its color.
What is a henge?
A henge is a circle of stones or posts (some were wooden) surrounded by a ditch with built up embankments.
What is a lintel and where can we find them?
A lintel is a flat horizontal beam which spans the space between two supports. They can be found on top of Stonehenge.
What is Cuneiform and what does it mean?
Cuneiform is one of the oldest forms of known writing and means “wedge-shaped” because people wrote it by cutting wedge shaped marks on a clay tablet using a stylus.
What is Hierarchical Scale?
Hierarchical scale is when people are portrayed bigger in art pieces because they hold more power (kings/leaders).
What is a ziggurat?
A ziggurat is an ancient Mesopotamian temple consisting of a lofty pyramidal structure built in successive stages with outside staircases and a shrine at the top.
What is a register?
A register is when art is broken up into different scenes. They are organized in parallel lines, show order, and status.
What is a stele?
A stele is a stone or wooden slab, generally taller than nit is wide, erected in the ancient world as a monument. May be inscribed, carved in relief, or painted. Often had text, ornamentation, and/or imagery.
What is the lost-wax casting technique?
The lost-wax casting technique is a way to make hollow metal sculptures with a mold. They often used Bronze or copper. This technique was used for bigger/life size sculptures.
What is a lamassu and what are they associated with?
A lamassu is a mythological figure in the religion of a creature made up of the body of a bull and the head of a human. It also had the wings of an eagle. Lamassu guardians are mostly associated with the power and influence of royalty of ancient Mesopotamia. Their main role was that of guardian spirits for humans.
What is representational art?
Representational art is anything that depicts/represents something in the real world.
What is non-objective art?
Non-objective art is a type of abstract art, whereby artists aren’t concerned with portraying recognizable objects from visible reality.
