Gibbons v. Ogden 1824
A New Yorke state law gave Aaron Ogden a license to operate steamboats on waters within state jurisdiction. Thomas Gibbons had a similar license to do the same thing but his was a federal coasting license granted by congress.
Pleasure v. Ferguson 1972
Louisiana had a law that required separate railway cars for blacks and whites. Homer Plessy took a seat in the “white only” car, he refused to move and was arrested
Brown v. Board of education 1954
Schools were separated by race and Linda Brown had to walk 5 miles to school through a dangerous train switching ground when a white school was one block from her home. Her father sued to get his daughter allowed in the white school
Furman v. Georgia 1972
Firman was robbing a house and the owner came home. He claimed he was running to leave tripped and the weapon fired killing the owner. He was tried for murder and found guilty and was sentenced to death. The supreme court said the death penalty constituted cruel and unusual punishment violating the constitution
Marbury v. Madison 1803
John Adams commissioned William Marbury and several others for judges. Thomas Jefferson ordered James Madison not to deliver the commissions, William sued and won.
Worcester v. Georgia 1832
Weccest was arrested for failure to have a license required to live in Cherokee county and refusing to obey Georgia militia to leave Cherokee lands
Tinker v. Des Moines 1969
John Tinker (15) Mary Beth Tinker (13) and Christopher Eckhardt (16) decided to protest the Vietnam war by wearing black armbands to their school during the Christmas holiday season. The wearing of the armbands was part of freedom of speech. Although school officials have the right to prohibit certain actions
Dred Scott v. Sandford 1857
Dred Scott taken by slaveholde John Sanford. Scott sued for his freedom, Supreme Court decided this case before the 14th amendment. African Americans were not citizens but property
Hazelwood v. Kuhlmeier 1988
The school sponsored news paper of Hazelwood East High, was written and edited by students. School newspapers are sponsored by the school and articles not directly reflecting the veil of the school for “leaning” purposes can be deleted from the paper
McCulloch v. Maryland 1819
Congress created the second bank of the United States. In 1818 the state of Maryland passed extra taxes on the bank. James McCulloch feed used to pay the taxes. Congress had the power to establish banks through implied powers. Federal government cannot be taxed by the state government
