Gibbons v. Ogden 1824

A

A New Yorke state law gave Aaron Ogden a license to operate steamboats on waters within state jurisdiction. Thomas Gibbons had a similar license to do the same thing but his was a federal coasting license granted by congress.

A

Schools were separated by race and Linda Brown had to walk 5 miles to school through a dangerous train switching ground when a white school was one block from her home. Her father sued to get his daughter allowed in the white school

Furman v. Georgia 1972

A

Firman was robbing a house and the owner came home. He claimed he was running to leave tripped and the weapon fired killing the owner. He was tried for murder and found guilty and was sentenced to death. The supreme court said the death penalty constituted cruel and unusual punishment violating the constitution

A

John Adams commissioned William Marbury and several others for judges. Thomas Jefferson ordered James Madison not to deliver the commissions, William sued and won.

McCulloch v. Maryland 1819

A

Congress created the second bank of the United States. In 1818 the state of Maryland passed extra taxes on the bank. James McCulloch feed used to pay the taxes. Congress had the power to establish banks through implied powers. Federal government cannot be taxed by the state government
