hidebound
(adjective) - narrow-minded and rigid, especially in opinions and prejudices
Synonyms: intolerant, inflexible
Sentence: The hidebound economies of days past were less flexible, and producers were more stymied by regulation.
fait accompli
(noun) - an accomplished and presumably irreversible deed
Synonyms: accomplished fact, done
Sentence: The enemy’s defeat was a fait accompli long before the formal surrender.
hierarchy
(noun) - any system of things or people arranged or graded one above another
Synonyms: pecking order, chain of command
Sentence: Although people of the United States are unequal in income and importance, in general, the hierarchy system is hardly demeaning.
liturgy
(noun) - a religious service or rite
Synonyms: ceremony, observance
Sentence: Part of baptismal liturgy is the renewal of our own baptismal commitment.
morass
(noun) - a tract of low, soft, wet ground
- used metaphorically to describe an entangling situation.
Synonyms: bog, quagmire
